Week 29 Home Check Reminder

Welcome to Week 29 of the Weekly Home Check

It’s time for another safety check—five months have passed, so let’s test those smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and make sure our fire extinguishers are in good working order.

But first, let's check out a tip from this week's sponsor Goodyear Tires.

How do you know if you need new tires?

Insert a penny into your tire's tread groove with Lincoln's head upside down and facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, it's time to replace your tires.

Worn tires don’t just impact how smooth and quiet your ride is – they can affect your stopping distance, handling, and traction, especially in wet conditions.

Goodyear Tires has been in the game for 125 years, so they know a thing or two about keeping our cars safe.

🌬️ Check Smoke Alarms & Carbon Monoxide Detectors:

In newer homes, these units will generally be interconnected but will still have a battery and should be tested regularly. Photoelectric smoke alarms are designed to detect smoke from slow, smoldering fires and are the recommended choice for most homes.

  • To test, simply press the test button until the alarm sounds. If the sound is weak or inconsistent, it's time to replace the batteries.
  • The batteries should be replaced about 1-2 times a year with a 9-volt battery I replace mine during Week 35 along with all my other emergency preparedness items.
  • If the unit chirps every 1-2 minutes, replace the batteries.
  • Equip each floor of your house with a unit, including the attic & basement.
  • These devices typically last around 10 years.

🔥 Inspect Fire Extinguishers:

Check to make sure the extinguisher is pressurized.

  • If the arrow is in the green, you are good to go.
  • If the arrow is in the red, it needs to be recharged.
  • Remember to turn the unit upside down about once a month to prevent the contents from settling on the bottom.
  • Check the expiration to make sure the unit hasn't expired

In the event you have to use, remember P.A.S.S.

  • P - Pull the pin
  • A - Aim the nozzle
  • S - Squeeze the trigger
  • S - Sweep the spray back and forth
