🏠 Week 35 Home Check Reminder

Welcome to Week 35 of the Weekly Home Check

These days, we’re constantly hearing about fires, earthquakes, and hurricanes, but many households still aren’t fully prepared. With September kicking off Emergency Preparedness Month, we’re diving into the topic this week.

But first, check out this week's sponsor, which helps keep these reminders free.

Assembling Your Emergency Kits

Every home should have 3 essential kits:

  • Home Stockpile: This kit is for sheltering at home without water, electricity, or gas. It includes larger, non-portable items.
  • Go Bag: Prepare a backpack with basic essentials for a quick exit from your home.
  • Car Kit: Keep basic items in your car for emergencies while away from home.

These kits should cover a mix of essential items:

  • Water: Aim for 1 gallon per person per day.
  • Non-Perishable Food: Aim for a three-day supply per person. These food bars are an easy way to start before investing in larger kits.
  • First Aid Kit: Include bandages, antiseptics, medications, and basic medical supplies.
  • Flashlights: Make sure you have a reliable light source.
  • Batteries: These are not only for flashlights but also for phones.
  • Personal Hygiene Items: Include toothbrushes, soap, hand sanitizers, and other essentials.
  • Important Documents: Keep copies of IDs, insurance papers, and emergency contacts.
  • Cash: Have small denominations on hand; credit cards & Apple Pay will not work during power outages.
  • Pets: Plan for your pets' safety and include extra bags of food for them.
  • Toys/Cards: Help pass the time with some items that don't use electricity.

If you're just getting started, don't be overwhelmed. Each visit to the market, buy one or two items, and before you know it, you'll be the most prepared on the block!
