🏡 Week 27 Home Check Reminder

Welcome to Week 27 of the Weekly Home Check

This week, we're continuing with some bathroom maintenance: replacing old caulking and sealing tile grout.

🛠 Replace Bathroom Caulking:

Over time, caulking can deteriorate, crack, or grow mold, compromising the waterproof barrier around your tub, shower, and sinks.

  1. Remove Old Caulk: Use a caulk remover tool or a razor blade to carefully scrape away the old caulk. Be gentle to avoid damaging the surrounding surfaces. Using an adhesive remover like Goo-Gone can help a lot.
  2. Clean the Area: Wipe down the area with a 50/50 water and vinegar mixture or an alcohol wipe to clean any residue, mold, or mildew. Let it dry completely.
  3. Apply New Caulk: Apply caulk at a 45-degree angle and along the seam using a caulk gun. Smooth the caulk with a caulk finishing tool or your finger dipped in soapy water.
  4. Let It Cure: Allow the caulk to dry for at least 24 hours before using the area to ensure a proper seal.

🧽 Steps to Seal Tile Grout:

Sealing grout helps protect your tiles from moisture penetration, stains, and mildew.

  1. Clean the Grout: Use a grout cleaner or a mixture of baking soda and water to scrub the grout lines. Let it dry completely.
  2. Apply Grout Sealer: Choose a penetrating grout sealer. Apply it evenly along the grout lines using a small brush or applicator bottle.
  3. Wipe Excess Sealer: After 10-15 minutes, wipe away any excess sealer from the tiles with a clean, damp cloth.
  4. Let It Cure: Allow the sealer to dry for the time specified on the product label, usually 24-48 hours.
