🏠 Week 16 Home Check Reminder

Welcome to Week 16 of the Weekly Home Check

Another three months have passed, which means it’s time to clean the washing machine and dryer vents again!

πŸ‘šπŸ‘• Clean the Washing Machine

Regular cleaning is essential and prevents odor caused by mold and mildew. Be sure to consult your washing machine user manual for any specific instructions and link the manual in your Home Journal & Logbook.

  • Dispensers: Remove them completely, then scrub and rinse in mild dish soap. Clean inside the dispenser housing with a damp towel.
  • Tub Clean: Drop in a washing machine cleaner and run a clean cycle or the longest, hottest cycle.
  • Exterior and Controls: Wipe down with a damp cloth and all-purpose cleaner.
  • Front loading machines:
    • Filters: Located on a bottom corner, pull out the hose to drain excess water into a bowl. Then, clean the filter/lint traps with a brush and dish soap. Also, clean and dry the filter housing with a damp towel.
    • Rubber Seal: Spray with vinegar and wipe. If there's significant mildew buildup, call an appliance repair tech to clean. Avoid using harsh chemicals on the rubber gasket, as it can damage the unit.
  • Remember to keep the door open after each use for proper drying.

🧦 Clean the Clothes Dryer

Cleaning your dryer is crucial to maintain efficiency and prevent fire hazards. It's recommended to have a professional occasionally service your dryer for a thorough clean.

  • Remove the lint screen, vacuum or scrub it clean, rinse, and air dry.
  • Unplug or disconnect from gas, remove the ventilation duct, then clean with a brush & vacuum.
  • Wipe the inside drum with a damp cloth.
  • Vacuum the lint trap housing with a narrow attachment.
  • Vacuum underneath and behind the machine.
  • Reattach the ventilation duct, ensuring there are no kinks or large dents.

Check around windows and doors for signs of leaks or water infiltration. Examine your roof for missing or damaged shingles, as well as signs of water penetration. Use a moisture meter to...

Welcome to Week 18 of the Weekly Home Check Three months have flown by, which means it’s time to swap out those air filters and clean the air purifiers again. πŸ’¨ Replace HVAC Filters For air return vents/grids: Locate the metal grid inside your home. They are generally in a central location, in the hallway or ceiling. Turn off the unit to prevent blowing dust. Open the grid, replace the used filter with a brand new one. I like to use a MERV 8, which can be found here. Close the grid, turn the...

This week, let’s tackle the walls, baseboards and floors. 🧹 Cleaning Floors, Baseboards, and Walls Walls & Baseboards Dust the entire surface. Mix 1 teaspoon of dish or castile soap with about 16 ounces of warm water into a spray bottle. Spray in a sweeping motion at an angle, avoiding direct spraying onto the wall. Use a damp microfiber flat mop to wipe off the soap, rinsing the mop as needed. For tough stains and...
