🪨 Seal Granite Countertops

Granite is a natural stone, which means it’s porous. Without proper sealing, it can absorb liquids, oils, and stains. Sealing creates a protective barrier that helps prevent damage and discoloration.

How to Seal Granite:

  1. Clean the Surface: Use a stone cleaner or warm water with a little dish soap. Wipe dry completely.
  2. Check If It Needs Sealing: Drip a few drops of water on the surface. If the water darkens the stone within 1–2 minutes, it’s time to reseal.
  3. Apply Granite Sealer: Spray or wipe a sealer evenly across the surface.
  4. Let It Absorb:Allow the sealer to sit for the time listed on the bottle (usually 10–15 minutes).
  5. Buff Dry: Use a clean microfiber cloth to remove any excess.
  6. Cure Time: Avoid heavy use or liquids for 24 hours.

Most granite should be sealed once a year, but high-use kitchens may need it every 6–12 months.

🧼 General Countertop Maintenance Tips

  • Wipe spills immediately, especially coffee, wine, oils, and acidic liquids.
  • Avoid vinegar, bleach, and ammonia on natural stone—they can break down the seal and cause etching.
  • Use cutting boards to prevent scratches and dulling.
  • Use trivets or hot pads—extreme heat can damage both natural stone and quartz.
  • Disinfect safely: Use a stone-safe disinfecting spray instead of harsh chemicals.

See you next week as we wrap up the year together!
