Welcome to Week 5 of The Weekly Home Check

Let's do a quick fire safety refresh! This week, we're testing our smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and checking that our fire extinguishers are in good working order.

🌬️ Check Smoke Alarms & Carbon Monoxide Detectors:

In newer homes, these units will generally be connected but will still have a battery and should be regularly tested. There are 2 types of alarms: Ionization, which will detect flames, and Photoelectric, which will detect smoke. It's recommended to have one with both, but if not, Photoelectric is the better option.

  • To test, simply press the test button until the alarm sounds. If the sound is weak or inconsistent, it's time to replace the batteries.
  • The batteries should be replaced about 1-2 times a year with a 9-volt battery though many newer devices come with a 10 year never change battery.
  • If the unit chirps every 1-2 minutes, replace the batteries.
  • Equip each floor of your house with a unit, including the attic & basement.
  • These devices typically last around 10 years.

πŸ”₯ Inspect Fire Extinguishers:

Check to make sure the extinguisher is pressurized.

  • If the arrow is in the green, you are good to go.
  • If the arrow is in the red, it needs to be recharged.
  • Remember to turn the unit upside down about once a month to prevent the contents from settling on the bottom.
  • Check the expiration to make sure the unit hasn't expired

In the event you have to use, remember P.A.S.S.

  • P - Pull the pin
  • A - Aim the nozzle
  • S - Squeeze the trigger
  • S - Sweep the spray back and forth

Be sure to add your purchase dates and warranty information for your smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers in your Home Journal & Log Book.
