🏠 Week 43 Home Check Reminder

Welcome to Week 43 of the Weekly Home Check

This week, we’re tackling one of the most effective ways to prepare for winter: inspecting for air drafts and replacing the weather stripping on your doors.

πŸͺŸ Check for Air Drafts:

  • Inspect Doors & Windows: Walk around your home and feel for any cold air coming through gaps in doors or windows. You can use a candle or incense stick to detect movement if you’re unsure.
  • Common Drafty Spots: Pay extra attention to areas where different materials meet, such as door frames and window sills.
  • Seal Gaps with Caulk: For small cracks around windows, a quick fix can be to apply weather-resistant caulk. I also like to use these window insulation kits.

πŸšͺ Replace Weather Stripping on Doors:

  • Remove Old Stripping: If the weather stripping is worn, brittle, or if you can see light passing through, then carefully peel it off from the door frame.
  • Measure & Cut New Stripping: Grab some new weather stripping and measure the lengths needed for your door. Cut the new stripping to fit.
  • Apply New Stripping: Press the new weather stripping firmly into place around the frame, making sure it creates a tight seal when the door is closed.
  • Test the Door: Open and close the door a few times to ensure the seal works without catching.
