🏡 Week 23 Home Check Reminder

Welcome to Week 23 of the Weekly Home Check

This week, we've got 2 tasks, first we'll go outside and check on the roof, then turn our attention back inside to any cracks or repairs needed on our walls.

🏠 Checking for Missing Shingles

  • Type of shingles: asphalt, wood, metal slate or clay/tile. 4 out of 5 homes use asphalt shingles.
  • From the ground, use binoculars to spot any missing, cracked or curled shingles
  • Check the attic for signs of water damage, leaks or light coming through.

🛠️ Common Causes of Roof Issues

  • Weather: Severe weather conditions like hail, heavy rain, and strong winds can damage shingles.
  • Age: Over time, shingles wear out and lose their effectiveness. A roof can last any where from 15-50 years.
  • Location: Shingles on the south and west sides will tend to have more exposure to harmful UV rays and will likely deteriorate more quickly than shingles on the north and east sides.
  • Lack of Maintenance: Regular inspections and timely repairs are crucial to maintaining roof integrity.

🧱 Repair/Paint Dents and Cracks on Walls

  • Clean the Area: Sand & wipe down the dent or crack to remove dust and dirt.
  • Fill the Hole: Use spackle or joint compound to fill the dent or crack, then smooth it with a putty knife. Let it dry completely.
  • Sand Smooth: Once dry, sand the area until it’s smooth and level with the wall. This 3-in-1 repair tool is perfect because it has the spackle, putty knife and sander.
  • Paint: Apply primer if needed, then paint the repaired area, blending it with the surrounding wall. For those little dents and scratches I like this little touch up paint pen.

Welcome to Week 27 of the Weekly Home Check This week, we're continuing with some bathroom maintenance: replacing old caulking and sealing tile grout. 🛠 Replace Bathroom Caulking: Over time, caulking can deteriorate, crack, or grow mold, compromising the waterproof barrier around your tub, shower, and sinks. While most people regularly clean the bowl and exterior, the tank often gets missed. 🚽 Toilet Bowl Tank: Over time, mineral deposits, mold, and mildew can build up inside the tank.
